I\u00a0feel fortunate\u00a0when wildlife reveals itself to me, even when I don&#8217;t capture the moment with my camera.\u00a0\u00a0Every now and\u00a0then, however,\u00a0I capture the moment,\u00a0 lucky\u00a0to be\u00a0at the right place at the right time with camera\u00a0in hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">W<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hale photography is particularly challenging for me.\u00a0I shoot hundreds of photos just to get a fair-to-middling photo of a humpback whale. After all, whales don&#8217;t pose, the boat is usually rocking, the weather\u00a0is generally gloomy in Southeast Alaska, and my photography skills mediocre.\u00a0 I often tell myself it is not the quality of the photo\u00a0that is\u00a0important, but the content captured.\u00a0\u00a0After all, look how many out-of-focus photos of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalplanet.com\/tv-shows\/finding-bigfoot\/lists\/4-fairbanks-ark-2009-a-hopping-bigfoot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Foot<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=loch+ness+monster&amp;espv=2&amp;biw=1242&amp;bih=585&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=RtGhVfW-GpHaoAS117dY&amp;ved=0CCkQsAQ\" target=\"_blank\">Loch Ness Monster<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/11\/19\/aliens-on-mars-photos_n_4303447.html\" target=\"_blank\">aliens<\/a> get published.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Admittedly, many of my Gastineau Guiding colleagues are far superior photographers and happy to share their artwork on my blog.\u00a0 So thank you Colin Peacock and \u00a0Annette Smith. According to<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juneauflukes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">juneauflukes .org<span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> &#8220;noises produced by whales include social and feeding related vocalizations. Sounds produced by humpback whales are low in frequency, generally lower than 1.5 kHz. Again, right place, right time. We play by the\u00a0recommendations outlined by<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/whalesense.org\/\">Whale Sense<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and committed to responsible whale watching practices. This unique behavior is believed to take place only in Southeast Alaska.
