I love mushrooms\u00a0 on\u00a0salads and in my soup.<br \/>\nI love mushrooms saut\u00e9ed in garlic and butter. Well, you got it, I love eating mushrooms.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Growing up in the Midwest, I fancifully imagined mushrooms pirouetting in\u00a0the\u00a0moonlight in their umbrella-shaped caps; toadstools for fairies and butterflies to light upon. Once I outgrew my childhood daydreams, mushrooms no longer intrigued me. I found them rather unremarkable, a lawn nuisance and only good for eating. That is until I moved to Juneau for the summer, started hiking the trails of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/wildflowers\/regions\/alaska\/MendenhallGlacier\/index.shtml\">Mendenhall Recreation Area<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">within the <a title=\"Tongass National Forest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/tongass\/\">Tongass National Forest<\/a>. Did you know there are tens of thousands of mushroom sprouting fungi (singular: fungus) species worldwide? Did you know that some are not only edible, but also<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/food-recipes\/features\/types-of-mushrooms\">medicinal and psychedelic<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">? Did you know that the native people of Southeast Alaska use mushroom juice as pigments for natural fibers? And, did you know there would be no Tongass National Forest without the fungi and their spore-producing mushrooms? Who knew?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Some mushrooms look like they come from the<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Elven Enclave of Rivendell\u00a0within<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/jrr-tolkien-9508428\">\u00a0<\/a>fictional Middle Earth<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mushrooms play a vital role in the life cycle of a forest. For example, mushrooms feed upon decaying matter, such as dead trees, and helps complete their decay so that they turn into new soil, nutrients for new life to take root and grow. Mushrooms are also an important food source for forest creatures, including squirrels, rabbits, bears and voles. Did I mention they are also popular with photographers and hikers?<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 449px;\" width=\"1256\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSCN2275.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-91 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSCN2275-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSCN2275-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSCN2275-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSCN2275.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Like Sleeping Beauty&#8217;s Apple, the Fly Agaric is beautiful to look at, poisonous to eat. With its brightly colored cap and polka dot adornments, the fly agaric or Amanita muscaria, is the most widely recognized mushroom in Alaska. It&#8217;s a show stopper. Found this beauty on the East Glacier Trail in the Mendenhall Recreation Area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the U.S. Forest Service, there are 5,000+ different mushroom-sprouting fungi growing throughout the Pacific Northwest, many found bursting forth in August and September along the recreational trails of Southeast Alaska. Their diversity is astonishing. Red, rust, gold, grey, black, blue, cinnamon, white, purple, pink. Some are multi-colored and speckled. Some are small, some are tall, some are fuzzy, some are slimy. Some are beguiling, some look as though they come from the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/middle-earth.thehobbit.com\/rivendell\">Elven Enclave of Rivendell\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">within<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/jrr-tolkien-9508428\">J. R. R. Tolkien&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fictional Middle Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fungi species are so numerous that many are still \u201cundescribed\u201d and unnamed. A U.S. Forest Service pamphlet,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/Internet\/FSE_DOCUMENTS\/stelprdb5414170.pdf\"><em>Mushrooms of the National Forest of Alaska<\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, states, \u201conly 15 to 40 percent of North American mushroom producing fungi have been described.\u201d That said, some do have common names that are fun or fanciful:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Alaskan Gold\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Angel Wings\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Crested Coral|<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Bear\u2019s Head\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Fairy Bonnet\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Jack-O-Lantern<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Hawk Wing\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Shaggy Mane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Strawberries and Cream<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Purple Fairy Club\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211; Pretty Pucker\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; Shrimp Russula<br \/>\n&#8211; Witches&#8217; Butter<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chicken of the Forest<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because of their overwhelming diversity, it is difficult to tell edible mushrooms from inedible mushrooms or from toxic toadstools. Therefore, I let my grocery store\u2019s produce manager make that decision for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Knowing what I know now, I still love mushrooms on my cheeseburgers. I just have a different perspective and greater respect for them, mesmerized by their petite poses along forest trails.
