May temps in Juneau historically range between, 42 and 57 degrees (6 and 14 centigrade). Therefore, I believe it is not rain, but sunshine, that triggers\u00a0the spring eruption of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlepuddle.org\/alaskan\/wild\/flowers-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">wild flowers <\/a>across the forest floor in late May. This year, however, due to a historically dry and warm spring, the flower power of Southeast Alaska sprang forth in early May, was in full bloom by May&#8217;s end and\u00a0is still going strong in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to a report from the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>(NOAA), <span style=\"color: #000000;\">May of 2015 was the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/national\/2015\/5\/supplemental\/page-6\">driest May<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">in recorded history across Southeast Alaska and one of the hottest months on record across the state.<\/span> \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/national\/2015\/5\/supplemental\/page-6\">Alaska statewide average temperature\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for May was the warmest\u00a0in 91-years of record keeping at 44.9\u00b0F, 7.1\u00b0F above average.\u201d April 2015 also recorded above normal temps. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMAG0578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1013 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMAG0578-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"IMAG0578\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMAG0578-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMAG0578-1024x575.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>While not optimum for the health of Alaska\u2019s temperate rainforest overall, wild and garden flowers, and me, reveled and thrived\u00a0in the record-challenging weather.\u00a0 Just see for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But before we begin, thank you to my Gastineau Guiding cohorts Scott Ranger\u00a0and Annette Smith and Jeff Franks for allowing me to share their first class flower photography with you.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150523_003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-976 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150523_003-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"20150523_003\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150523_003-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.prwriterpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150523_003.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0SIBERIAN MINER&#8217;S-LETTUCE<br \/>\nPhoto and text by Scott Ranger\u00a0\u00a9 2015<br \/>\nLocation: East Glacier Trail, Mendenhall Recreation Area, Juneau<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the gold miners arrived from their sea journey to Alaska, many were beginning to suffer from scurvy. Those who came before told them to eat this plant and are responsible for its common name. These showy &#8220;flowers&#8221; are the first abundant color to burst forth in early spring. According to local university scholars, cooks and gardeners, &#8220;Various parts of the plant are edible.. In spring, the shoot may be peeled and nibbled. In early summer, the petals&#8230; add a touch of color and flavor to salads, sandwich spreads and omelets.
